Allium

Allium is a bulb. It originates from the central region of Asia, and thrives in the northern hemisphere climate. There is around 600 different types. The Allium grows with straight sword shaped leaves, flowers in compact balls. Most varieties are sun loving. Sand rich, well drained soil with some clay is the perfect place to grow this plant. Many types of Alliums belong to our best garden plants. The early flowering varieties can be difficult to place in the garden together with other plants. This is because the leaves dry after the flower is finished. It is there for best to plant these varieties with other later flowering plants and shrubs. Many varieties do well as cut flowers and some are good for drying. Most of the Alliums are purple, white or yellow. It is a very good cut flower. The biggest flower can be up to 20cm in diameter.
